Starter kit
Sensory Room Starter kit
You don't need a whole room to give your child a place to move, crash and calm down. Here's what I'd buy first, depending on how much space you have. Every piece is something we use in the clinic or recommend to families every day.
A corner of the bedroom or playroom
Small space
One swing and a few calm-down tools. Hang the swing from a ceiling joist and the rest tucks away.
A playroom or basement you can give over to it
Dedicated room
The full setup: climbing, swinging, crashing and a calm corner, so your child can get the input they need and then settle.
Which one?
Small space vs. dedicated room
| Small space | Dedicated room | |
|---|---|---|
| Space | A 6 × 6 ft corner | A room with a clear wall and open floor |
| Installation | One ceiling hook for the swing | Swing hook plus a wall gym anchored into studs |
| Covers | Swinging, deep pressure, calm-down | Climbing, swinging, crashing, spinning and calm-down |
| Budget | Lower | Higher, but it grows with them for years |
| Best for | Kids who need a calm-down spot | Sensory seekers who need big movement every day |
Hang swings from a solid ceiling joist, anchor wall equipment into studs, put mats underneath and always supervise.
